Kindly hosted by Paul and Beatrice Gomory. String quartets by Haydn and Glazunov, served with tea and home made cakes, and performed by the LaNote String Quartet:
Karsten Windt & Yuna Lee, violin, Matthew Young, viola, & Sebastien Gingras, cello
Dear Friends of Salon Classique,
Paul and Beatrice Gomory are kindly opening the doors for us again to their beautiful home in the Noe Valley Hills, with great views of the city and San Francisco Bay. We will serve cakes that are home made from family recipes (my grandfather was a baker in my hometown Berlin), along with sparkling wine, and tea using a Samovar in the Russian tradition.
Our quartet, the LaNote String Quartet, is formed by San Francisco Symphony Musicians Sebastien Gingras, cello, and Matthew Young, viola, Yuna Lee, former member of the Phaedros Quartet, and myself on the violin. I will be guiding our audience through the program. We will perform one of the so called Sun Quartets by Joseph Haydn, Op. 20 No.2 in C major. It is not only a beautiful, but also very modern piece considering the time it was composed - the famous "Sturm und Drang" period. Each instrument is given an equally important role in the score. The Novelettes Op. 15 by Romantic Russian composer Alexander Glazunov gave the concert its title. These five colorful movements from 1886 are written in different folkloristic styles and give an early example of the genius of the composer, whose works are rarely heard outside his home country. Here is a great opportunity to discover "new music" that is more than 100 years old, from an artist who was an important figure in public music life in Russia during his life time.
We look forward to welcoming you in the beautiful French style salon of the house for this rare quartet program.
Doors open at 3pm, music at 3:30pm
